What Is Coaching, Really?

by Raquel Najera, Program Director

When people hear the word coaching, they often imagine someone who gives advice, fixes problems, or motivates you with a pep talk. The internet is teeming with folks who “coach” in this way. Until I stepped through the doors of the Academy for Coaching Excellence (ACE), I was very much of the same mind.

Here, I had the joy of discovering that coaching is something so much more powerful and practical than that. I was relieved to learn that a coach isn’t there to diagnose you or tell you what to do. At its heart, coaching is a professional partnership that evokes your innate wisdom, and our work as certified professional coaches is to create the kind of presence where you can go past your normal stopping points and take action on what truly matters to you.

How Coaching Differs from Therapy

At ACE, we recognize and honor the value of therapy. It’s important for us to clarify the distinction between therapy and coaching so that we ensure our clients get the kind of support they most need.

      • Therapists are trained, licensed healthcare providers who help clients heal from trauma, depression, grief, anxiety, and other emotional or psychological challenges. Their work often focuses on the past — on understanding, resolving, and integrating what’s been painful or disruptive.
      • Coaches work with people who want support moving forward. As a coach, our focus is helping clients go beyond the familiar patterns that keep them from living a life of maximum contribution — a life that reflects their values, purpose, and genius.

Consider this analogy:

An athlete with a sprained ankle would work with a physical therapist in order to heal. Upon healing, they would then work with a masterful coach to support them to play their best possible game.

Both are essential. They just serve different needs.

A well-trained coach can then refer clients to a therapist when something arises that they see is outside the scope of coaching. In fact, this perspective of clarity and integrity that we teach our students is part of what makes coaching so effective.

Coaching vs. Consulting or Mentoring

Coaching is also different from consulting and mentoring:

      • Consultants leverage their subject matter expertise, analyze problems, and design solutions.
      • Mentors share their experience, wisdom, and best practices from their own path.

These can be incredibly valuable — and sometimes they complement coaching beautifully — but in coaching, the client generates their own solutions. The coach’s role is to ask powerful questions, offer perspectives, and hold a clear, supportive space where the client’s own wisdom becomes accessible and actionable.

Why Coaching Matters

When someone is supported with deep compassion to develop more clarity about what is meaningful and important to them, something remarkable happens:

They begin to access the genius that was already within them.

You see, coaching isn’t about fixing you — because there’s nothing wrong with you. It’s about supporting you to bring forward the brilliance, integrity, and possibility that’s already within you.

A great coach helps you:

      • See yourself and your situation more clearly
      • Reconnect with the purpose that lives within you
      • Break through old patterns and “stopping points”
      • Access the support of your beloved community
      • Take consistent and authentic action
      • Live a life of great meaning and contribution with greater ease

Because when people have the support to take powerful action, they uplift not just their own lives, but those of their family their team, and their community.

In other words:

Coaching isn’t only about personal transformation. It’s about collective transformation.

And that’s how we move closer to the world we envision: one where everyone is supported 100% and no one is left out.
